Welcome, Foolish Mortals, to the long overdue trip blog for Tom and my early May triumphant return to Disney World!
The last time we were at Disney World was December 2016, which was far far too long ago. An expensive foray to Disneyland last summer (to visit the original, and go to D23) meant that it was a year and a half between Disney World trips, but absence makes the heart grow fonder, and we were eager to see our favorite place again.
Once again, we had an early morning wake up call for a flight that departed around 6am. Sleepy eyes abounded, but I still had to capture an "on our way" selfie.
I picked up this AoA hat on a super sale on the Parks App. I am totally not normally a ball cap kind of girl, but I thought it would be fun to wear for our travel days. So glad to be back to staying at our home resort.
Sunrise over the wing of the plane.
After we checked in at the resort, and left our carry-ons at bell services to be sent to our room once it was ready, we hopped a bus to the Magic Kingdom.
Our tradition is to visit Merida first thing in the parks on our first day, but I had a small first priority...getting a pair of these:
They had just debuted a handful of days before for Pride Month, and I knew they were likely to be a big hot ticket item. Sure enough, I started the day going to Le Chapeau to get one, and they were out. But they said the Emporium had some across the street. We checked their hat display and they were nowhere to be found, so we were about to leave the store when I asked a CM, who said they were behind the counter near the middle of the store. I bought two...for myself and for a friend...and as I was paying, the last six pairs were snatched up. Two days later, they were sold out parks-wide. I'm not sure if they ever got them back in or not.
I am utterly embarrassed to admit that although I am a passionate follower of Disney parks style and Disney parks info, SOMEhow the information never reached me that the day we arrived was MK's Dapper Day. What? How did I miss this information?
The irony is...I wore dresses at several points during our trip, but of course this wasn't one of the days I had a fancy outfit planned. Of course. Argh!
We often go right around the start of May, and in 2019, I'll triple check the date of Dapper Day and have an outfit planned this time if it coincides with our trip. Mark my words!
Anyway, after we got the Pride Ears, we were hungry for a bit of food, so we walked over to Sleepy Hollow, taking pictures of a few fun ensembles on the way.
Dapper Cheshire Cat and Alice:
Dapper R2D2 and Ahsoka:
At Sleepy Hollow, Tom got the classic Mickey waffle with strawberries and whipped cream, and I got the Nutella and fruit waffle. Mine was so very good, but next time I get it, I'll take it off the waxed paper right away, as the breading of the waffle started to stick on there toward the end in the heat, and it got hard to eat/messy.
*Now* after these two brief distractions we were ready to meet Ms. Merida.
Let me back up here and let you know...when we get our magic bands, I always do artworks on them. I have the procedure down to a science basically. This time, since we went for the Flower & Garden Festival, I gave Tom's band a picture of Spider-Man with his Spidey senses tingling at a bee about to land on the daisy he is holding. My band had a painting of Merida in a flower crown.
Merida liked my "bear ears." Raaawr.
No idea what we were laughing at here, but I love her face.
So I showed her the magic band and she loved it!
Aw, yay. I had to get a picture of her posing with it.
Photos with Merida!
We did a little shopping, including the glass/crystal shop on Main Street, where Tom greatly admired this Chernabog and took a photo.
Haunted Mansion Fast Pass!
Once again, I forgot what direction we were supposed to hitch. ARGH. Gotta remember: Hitch toward the queue line, not toward the mansion.
The Photopass photographer saw our buttons and had us hold it out. The CM at check in at Art of Animation was the one who wrote "10 'ears'" on our buttons :D
A great Tiana Disneybound
Despite my lack of dapper attire, I still wanted outfit photos. See these ears? I lost them later this day. :( The Beauty and the Beast kimono is from Hot Topic, the Lumiere's Culinary Cabaret shirt is from Whosits and Whatsits. The Beauty and the Beast book purse is from Target.
I was curious to see what the line was like for the Purple Wall. It's a popular spot to take outfit photos on a regular park day, let alone Dapper Day. This was the line.
Cute Jane and Pooh Dapper Bounds.
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Fast Pass Time!
Then we decided to go meet Donald and Goofy at Storybook Circus.
And ride the train from the Circus back to the front of the park. Well, that was the plan. We actually ended up staying on all the way around again.
Time to relax for a while and enjoy the park view.
Loooooved these Hitchhiking Ghosts! And the ladies were so sweet. They agreed to a photo...
...if I'd take one with them too.
Then it was time for our dinner at Be Our Guest restaurant. While we waited for our table in the West Wing to be available, I read a story to the morose gargoyle on the bridge to Beast's castle.
I'm so happy that every time we've done our "first day of trip"dinner, we've managed to get seats in the West Wing. This particular time, we had a truly excellent waiter.
This is going to be the last time we eat there that the old/original menu is in place. In July, they are introducing a new, fancier menu with a flat price for food that's a lot more French. Looking forward to the new menu!
Our waiter gave us an anniversary Grey Stuff.
A vlogger we follow is obsessed with the strawberry cupcake at Be Our Guest, so we tried it. It was waaaaaaaaay too sweet for us.
The first time we went to Be Our Guest, our waiter told us that there was a hidden Mickey in the drapes. I've looked for it every time we've visited, to no avail. And our wonderful waiter finally directed me right to it.
See it? Here's some help:
Every time we visit, I am entertained and appalled by this unicorn tapestry shredded by Beast.
This was my first time meeting Beast with his handsome new look. I have to say, I was even more thrilled by the experience than I expected. I teared up a bit.
And that's the end of our day 1 story! Stay tuned for every day of our 8-day trip...our longest time at Disney World yet.
